Zenith Fellow Intern, Class of 2024
Carleton University, Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering: Space Systems Design
Host Organization:
Euroconsult
Mentor:
Vou Theophanous

Ryan is a fourth-year engineering student at Carleton University, majoring in Aerospace with a focus on space systems design. He grew up in Ottawa, Ontario and has always had an interest in the space sector.

Throughout his undergraduate degree at Carleton, Ryan has applied himself to numerous space projects. He designed, built, and verified a benchtop Raman spectrometer for a hypothetical mission to the Europan surface. He is a member of the Autonomous Space Robotics (DOT) capstone project, in which a chaser platform successfully docks with a spinning target while avoiding a passive obstacle. In the DOT project, he works on the computer vision sub team, which uses ArUco markers to acquire target platform position data. In a separate spacecraft dynamics and control project, he implemented closed-loop simulations to evaluate the performance of nonlinear quaternion feedback control laws, integrated with an orbit propagator.

Ryan previously worked at MPB Communications in Montreal, as an opto-mechanical intern on the Space Photonics team. He gained experience modeling optical amplifiers and lunar systems in SolidWorks and basic lunar constellations in STK. He also tested novel 3D printing methods to improve product performance and increase the versatility of additive manufacturing in-house. He also worked as a research assistant in the Energy and Particle Technology Laboratory (EPTL) at Carleton, where he worked closely with a post-doctoral fellow to investigate the oxidation of metallic particles, with a hope of scaling the process for sustainable energy generation.

Ryan was involved with Oronos Polytechnique in Montreal, working on the payload team to design, draft, and manufacture the payload structure. He worked with a small team to design a novel payload for launch at Spaceport America Cup in July 2023. The payload placed 2nd in a competition of over 150 teams from 24 countries. Ryan is also involved with the CUinSpace rocket team at Carleton, working with the Aerostructures team to develop a fin can for the rocket body.

Outside of school and work, Ryan enjoys traveling and exploring different cultures. He also plays hockey recreationally and enjoys staying active. In the summer he enjoys hiking and camping in national parks across North America.

He is thrilled to join Euroconsult as part of the Zenith Canada Pathways Fellowship this summer.
