Sumaiya Abedin (she/her)

Zenith Fellow Mentee, Class of 2024
Concordia University, Bachelor of Electrical Engineering
Mentor:
Dr. Joelle Thorgrimson

Sumaiya is a fourth-year undergraduate student studying electrical engineering at Concordia University in Montreal. She has a strong interest in Space Medicine and seeks to explore its intersection with engineering technology.

During her time as a co-op student, Sumaiya gained experience as a research assistant at the Impact laboratory, where she focused on ultrasound elastography and applied various image analysis techniques by adapting the Matlab version of the published paper to Python. She also contributed to the Space Concordia Robotics division as a member of the electronics team. In addition, she participated in IGEM Concordia, where she developed a Python modeling script to analyze the impact of different biomarkers on tumor cell concentration. Currently, Sumaiya works part-time as a Biomedical Engineering intern at KATINNOVATION, a Quebec-based startup dedicated to developing an innovative device for osteoporosis patients to prevent bone fracture.

Apart from her academic and professional pursuits, Sumaiya is actively involved in community service. She has served as a Co-op mentor, helping engineering students secure their initial internships, and worked as a COVID agent in a long-term care facility during the pandemic. With a strong desire to further explore Space Medicine, Sumaiya is excited about gaining exposure to space-related projects through Zenith.
